SUSTAINABILITY | Read Our Commitment
Whether you grow your own food on an allotment or at home, using biochar will not only benefit your edibles, it will provide long-term benefits to your soil too. Interestingly, the theme for the National Allotments Society’s annual week is ‘Plotting for the Future’, this is similar to the principles that our business is built on, we create products to help make garden soil the best it possibly can be whilst still being sustainable. This blog will explain how!
One of the questions we get asked a lot is; ‘can biochar be used to improve vegetable growing results?’ Quite simply the answer is yes and now is a great time to incorporate it into your garden soil. We have written extensively about the brilliant work that biochar can do in the soil and the benefits it can bring to anyone growing edibles. If you want to read more, take a look at our blog; What is biochar and how do you use it? However we have summarised just some of the benefits below.
The latter two points on that list may sound a little too good to be true and need a little further explanation! The way in which biochar is produced, by a method called pyrolysis makes it a non-biodegradable substance, once added to the soil, it will remain there for hundreds, if not thousands of years, continuing to do its good work. Plus for every 1 kg of biochar added to the soil, it will offset 3 kg of carbon (as CO2e) - you can find out more about this here.
Therefore biochar is dual purpose, it will benefit plants sustainably, reducing the need for chemicals and every time it is used in garden soil you are putting beneficial carbon back, not only helping the soil now, but also for future generations, which is fantastic!
Back to National Allotment’s Week! Whether you have an allotment, a garden or just a few containers, there is always space to grow, these are our top products for allotment owners and home-growers alike.
Sprinkle biochar into seed drills, plant or tree holes to ensure it comes into contact with the rootzone. Used directly in open soil, raised beds and containers to improve the quality of your soil and the growth of your plants.
As the title suggests this is a combination of ingredients to super-charge your edibles. A soil improver enriched with our biochar humification agent, micronized mineral powers, NPK, organic matter and made with green waste, it is 100% organic, 100% natural, 100% peat free and from 100% sustainable resources. Add directly to the soil as an improver (and not a compost) at the point of planting to ensure it comes into direct contact with the rootzone. Cover, water and leave it to work its magic.
Another SoilFixer product to supercharge, this time it’s for your homemade SF60 Super Compost. Simply add the agent to your compost heap to increase the levels of colloidal humus and biochar. Each time new waste is added to the bin, sprinkle the agent on the waste and rake it in.
